Tower 28 SunnyDays Tinted Sunscreen Review

After years of using and loving Beautycounter’s Dew Skin, I decided to try Ilia’s Super Serum Skin Tint because it was getting so many great reviews and because I am a beauty junkie and not afraid to try new products. Let me be clear, I love both and they are very similar, but when I heard about the brand, Tower 28 and their own tinted sunscreen, I had to give it a go. If you’re prone to sensitive skin and eczema, I highly recommend you check out this review and the Tower 28 brand!

Tower 28 SunnyDays Tinted Sunscreen Review

About Tower 28

Tower 28 was named after a lifeguard tower in Santa Monica and was started by a beauty executive named Amy who was constantly dealing with sensitive skin issues, specifically eczema. She was fed up, not only with products that irritated her skin despite claiming to be hypo-allergenic, but also with some of the questionable ingredients in some of the conventional skincare and cosmetics on the market. She created her California-inspired line to be easy on sensitive skin with non-irritating, calming, and non-toxic ingredients.

What Makes Tower 28 Different?

With so many beauty brands out there right now, you’re probably asking yourself how different can this one really be? And I agree, the market is a tad overwhelmed with beauty brands. It really comes down to personal preference and what works best for you and you skin’s needs. I’ve tried a lot of cosmetics and skincare from many different brands and this is the first line I’ve seen that takes sensitive, eczema prone skin seriously without feeling serious (you know, clinical). Amy, the founder, wanted Tower 28 to be fun and reflect that laid-back, carefree California lifestyle while still remaining non-toxic and suitable for super sensitive skin. In fact, they are the only cosmetic brand to 100% follow The National Eczema Foundation’s ingredient guildelines. Tower 28 also focuses heavily on non-toxic ingredients and follows the EU (European Union) Regulations for product safety which bans over 1,300 potentially harmful cosmetic and personal care ingredients. Their products are hypo-allergenic, gluten-free, cruelty-free, vegan, non-comedogenic and dermatologist tested.

My Review Of Tower 28 SunnyDays Tinted Sunscreen

SunnyDays Tinted Sunscreen (SPF 30) is just a tinted sunscreen without an added moisturizer like some of the other BB and CC creams. I already use a facial oil and moisturizer so I probably don’t really need a tinted moisturizer, even though that’s what I’ve used in the past, but some people may need that extra boost of moisture or want an “all in one” product. If that’s the case for you, then I recommend either the Ilia’s Super Serum Skin Tint or Beautycounter’s Dew Skin. SunnyDays does act a little more like a foundation with coverage that is buildable from light to medium. According to Tower 28, applying with your fingertips gives you lighter coverage than if you were to apply with a makeup sponge or brush. I, personally, like applying with a makeup sponge because it keeps my hands clean and makes application so easy and effortless, so I use just a little more than a pea-size amount to get that light coverage I want. I thought it went on smoothly, looked natural and subtly evened out my skintone (even in a mirror in a sunny room), which is exactly what I’m looking for in a tinted sunscreen or moisturizer. If you’re up for trip to your local Sephora or Credo Beauty (yes, they both carry Tower 28!), I recommend picking out your shade in person. However, they do make it pretty easy to pick out your shade online via the skintone descriptions and the face model pictures. Tower 28 also claims that their shades (14 of them) are “flexible” and I can attest to that since the shade I picked is a touch lighter than I wanted but still blends in easily and looks natural. Once I start using self tanner, I will need to go a shade or two darker. Online reviews are mixed, it seems as though there are some who absolutely love it and others who complained that it sat on the top of their skin and felt oily, but I did not find that to be the case for me. It’s always worth taking a peek at reviews before purchasing any product!

Clean Beauty on a Budget, Check Out These 7 Brands

The clean beauty world is exploding. I see new brands popping up left and right and some are, not only conscious of their ingredients, limited budgets as well. I know we are all starting to feel that pinch a bit as we see the price of almost everything creeping up. Many of us still want to use less toxic, cleaner personal care and beauty products but are just not willing to break our budget to do so. These high end, higher cost brands argue that the time and research spent on finding the most effective and safest ingredients drives the cost up. While I do understand that, there are many people who just cannot afford those high price points and should not be left choosing between breaking their budget or buying products they don’t feel comfortable purchasing because of questionable ingredients. If you choose to live this lifestyle like I do, it’s nice to have options that don’t break the bank. I did some research and found a handful of brands that are making an effort to keep their price points down while also providing an effective product with safe ingredients. Here’s what I put together for you.

Clean Beauty on a Budget, Check Out These 7 Brands

Acure is the first brand that comes to mind because they have been around for a while. Acure is a no-frills brand and features a full line of skin, hair and body products. I’ve been using their body lotions for years and I am always so pleased with the price point and how well they work especially on my dry, itchy winter skin. Prices range from under $10 to under $25 (excluding their kits). SHOP ACURE

Lily Lolo is a cosmetics brand started by Vikki Khan when she couldn’t find mineral makeup in her native UK. The brand has grown and now features a full line of cosmetics. I especially love the eyeshadow palettes. Everything, including brushes and eye shadow palettes, is under $40. SHOP LILY LOLO

Tower 28 is a California inspired brand named after a lifeguard tower in Santa Monica. They create products for sensitive skin and are all dematologist and allergy tested. Everything with the exception of their product bundles is under $40. SHOP TOWER 28

Juice Beauty has been around since 2005 and has grown into a respected and trusted clean beauty brand. They provide a wide range of products including cosmetics, moisturizers, cleansers, serums and treatments. Prices can vary quite a bit too. The serums and treatments are in the $60-$100 range, which is expensive but the cosmetics tend to be priced under $40. It’s worth checking out their product line and seeing if something fits into your budget! SHOP JUICE BEAUTY

Exa Beauty is a relatively new brand that focuses on providing a wide range of color options for all skin tones while also creating formulas that are healthy for the skin and our planet. They have a small line of products that include primers, mascara, foundations and color correctors. I really like their color corrector. Everything aside from one of their bundles is under $40. SHOP EXA BEAUTY

INNBEAUTY PROJECT was started by two beauty industry veterans in an effort to create safe, effective skincare products that are also budget friendly. The line includes cleansers, moisturizers and serums. Prices are under $50 for individual products and bundles are $34 and up. SHOP INNBEAUTY PROJECT

Three Ships was started by two women who were fed up with complicated, greenwashed and high priced skincare. They created a simple, clean and afforable line of products for all skin types that are clearly labeled and provide an ingredient glossary for full product transparency. Aside from their bundles, prices are under $40. SHOP THREE SHIPS

OTHER OPTIONS:

DIY - I actually love a good DIY beauty project. Some things like body moisturizers are really easy to make yourself. Most ingredients can be found at your local health food store or online. Wellness Mama has a ton of DIY beauty recipes on her website.

Payment Apps - Another option would be to use a payment app like Afterpay, Shop Pay or Klarna to spread out the payments over time for your beauty products. These payment apps kind of remind me of old school layaway, except you get the product upfront and the apps automtically charge the payments to your bank account on a set schedule. Most online and even some brick and mortar stores offer this option for consumers. I think it’s especially helpful when you are stocking up on products.

7 Winter Skincare Products I’m Loving Right Now

It’s a new season and I thought it would be a good time to share some of skincare products I’ve been using and loving. Since it’s the winter and super dry from lack of humidity and indoor heating, my skin’s needs have definitely changed so what I’m using now is different from what I was using during the warmer months. I’m also always trying new products and when I find something that works for me, I also like to share it in case it works for someone else.

7 Winter Skincare Products I’m Loving Right Now

Kari Gran Lip Whip - Kari Gran is clean beauty brand dedicated to creating products that promote healthy skin for women with aging skin. Lip Whip is a moisturizing lip balm with color that is buildable. I like it because it gives me a very natural, sheer wash of color while also acting as a moisturizing balm. It comes in multiple shades, including clear. My favorite color is Jolene! Kari Gran Lip Whip $25

100% Pure Blood Orange Cleansing Balm - I love using a cleansing balm especially in the winter because it cleanses the skin without soap. 100% Pure’s cleansing balm uses blood orange and a blend of oils to gently remove makeup and other impurities. It’s great for winter skin but if you have dry skin, you can use it all year. I’ve used a couple of cleansing balms at much higher price points and this one works just as well and is very reasonably priced. 100% Pure Blood Orange Cleansing Balm $38

Acure Seriously Soothing 24hr Moisture Lotion - I’ve been using this lotion on and off for a few years and I keep coming back to it because it’s well priced and it works really well on my dry winter skin. It’s thick and protective without being greasy and fragrance free so it’s good for sensitive skin. Acure Seriously Soothing 24hr Moisture Lotion $9.39

Herbivore Moon Dew 1% Bakuchiol + Peptides Retinol Alternative Eye Cream - I was interested in trying this eye cream because I like the Herbivore brand and I was curious about the retinol alternative. I am really sensitive to retinols and have opted to not use them in my skincare so I wanted to see if this eye cream was able to provide similar benefits. I’ve been using it for a couple of months now and I like it a lot! It’s lightweight and layers well under my makeup. It’s hydrating and firming, but also has honey locust seed polysaccharides that instantly tighten and lift skin. Herbivore Moon Dew 1% Bakuchiol + Peptides Retinol Alternative Eye Cream $48

GOOP GLOW Cloudberry Exfoliating Jelly Cleanser - Exfoliating is a really important part of any skincare routine. It helps remove dead skin cells so that makeup goes on smoothly and products like serums and moisturizers can actually access fresh skin and do their job. I only exfoliate a couple times a week but this one is gentle enough to use everyday and a little goes a long way. I also like a combination exfoliator and cleanser because it eliminates adding an additional step to my routine. GOOP GLOW Cloudberry Exfoliating Jelly Cleanser $35

Herbivore Pink Cloud Soft Moisture Cream - Another winner from Herbivore. This cream is very light and creamy and is perfect for my skin type. I tend to have combination skin and this is not too heavy for the oily parts of my face and is just enough moisture for the drier parts of my face. I do also use one of Herbivore’s facial oils to help balance my skin and provide a layer of protection. I also like that this moisturizer is fragrance free because I’ve never really seen the point of putting fragrance on your face! Fragrance and essential oils can also be really irritating to the skin so I am happy to see companies eliminating them from their facial products. Herbivore Pink Cloud Soft Moisture Cream $44

Find Your Favorite Cleansing Balm From These Four Clean Beauty Brands

I’m relatively new to the world of cleansing balms but I have absolutely fallen in love with how well they melt away makeup, oil and dirt without stripping skin. Cleansing balms use a blend of skin-friendly oils to gently cleanse but also moisturize, nourish and protect skin. The balm starts out solid but then easily melts into your skin to do its work. Many people use a follow-up cleanser but those with dry, sensitive or eczema-prone skin may opt to use only a cleansing balm since it is so gentle. I tend to change how I use a balm depending on the season; in the colder, drier months I use just a balm and then warmer, humid months I follow up with a deeper cleanser. They can also be used as an overnight mask, softening cuticles and as an occasional moisturizer for dry patches. I love a multi-tasking product! As you’ve probably guessed, there are SO many options available now. I’ve picked only four from my favorite brands.

Find Your Favorite Cleansing Balm From These Four Clean Beauty Brands

Beautycounter Counter+ Lotus Glow Cleansing Balm - This is the first balm I tried because I was a consultant at the time and was able to get a good discount. It is amazing and such a great multi-tasking product, it’s one of Beautycounter’s best selling products for a reason! Formulated with a blend of oils and botanical extracts to cleanse, soften and brighten skin. It’s pricey but a little does go a long way. Beautycounter Counter+ Lotus Glow Cleansing Balm $79.

100% Pure Blood Orange Cleansing Balm - Formulated with blood orange to gently remove excess oil and coconut and olive oils to remove stubborn makeup. I’m currently using this cleansing balm and loving it. It’s not too heavy, takes makeup off effortlessly and a little goes a long way! 100% Pure Blood Orange Cleansing Balm $38. Depending on the humidity levels and state of my skin, I do sometimes follow up with Beautycounter’s Charcoal Cleansing Bar for a deeper clean.

Odacite Le Blue Balm - Specifically formulated for mature, dry, irritated and/or sensitive skin. Contains blue chamomile and squalane to soothe and repair. It also contains shea butter, hemp, jojoba and almond oils for supreme moisturizing benefits. Odacite Le Blue Balm $48.

True Botanicals Ginger Turmeric Cleansing Balm - Formulated with cucumber seed oil, turmeric and ginger root to calm and fight dullness as well as yucca extract to cleanse and nourish and finally lactic and azelaic acid to gently refine skin. Good for rosacea, redness and uneven, rough skin. Highly rated and many customer reviews. True Botanicals Ginger Turmeric Cleansing Balm $48.

Ten Clean and Sustainable Beauty Brands You Need To Check Out Right Now

The clean, green and sustainable beauty and personal care world is exploding with some amazing brands. You know the clean beauty world is gaining some serious traction and attention when you see larger retailers like Sephora and Anthropologie carrying cleaner options for their customers. If you feel like you have not been able to find the right fit for you, one or several of these brands might just do the trick. If you’re a beauty junkie like myself, perhaps you just want some new brands to try. Some of these have been around for a while and are just lesser known and some have only hit the market in the last few years. Either way, let’s take a look at the brands that are getting me excited!

Ten Clean and Sustainable Beauty Brands You Need To Check Out Right Now

Pyt Beauty - Pyt was started by duo Amy Carr and Mary Schulman in 2018 after being concerned about some of the toxins being used in cosmetics and the effect that the beauty industry was having on our environment. They set out to create a clean and green brand that was also fun and effective. Now they have a collection of cosmetics that is free from over 28 concerning ingredients and uses sustainable plastic options like recyclable plastic, recycled plastic, sugarcane plastic and pre-degraded plastic. I was so excited to see that they have an eye primer because that has been one of the harder products to find with cleaner ingredients. Check out their full line of cosmetics and their mission at Pyt Beauty.

Jones Road - After selling her incredibly successful beauty line and leaving the company a few years ago, Bobbi Brown was not ready to leave the beauty industry. She started Jones Road with the mission to create high-performance, streamlined, clean beauty products for all ages and skin types. Bobbi calls it the “makeup equivalent of the Swiss Army Knife” and stays true to her “no makeup, makeup look” philosophy. Jones Road goes above and beyond E.U. standards by banning more than 2,700 concerning ingredients from their cosmetic formulations. I’ve been using the eye liner and loving how easily it glides on and lasts. Check out Jones Road’s full line and read about their story here.

Primally Pure - Started by Bethany McDaniel in 2014 after farm life began to teach her about the power of eating real food, thus opening her eyes to the wellness world in a whole new way. She ditched her conventional beauty and skincare products and decided to start making her own with simple, pure ingredients. The “less is more” philosophy is at the heart of Primally Pure by formulating products only using clean, high quality ingredients sourced from nature and tested for efficacy so you are getting a clean product that actually works. I use their deodorant and it has been the best non-toxic deodorant I have tried to date (and I’ve tried A LOT). Check out the full line of products and their story on the Primally Pure website.

Lily Lolo - Lily Lolo was started in the U.K. by Vikki Khan who fell in love with mineral makeup when she was traveling but wasn’t able to find it in England. She took a chance and launched Lily Lolo to fill that void and has since grown a brand of clean, mineral-based cosmetics for all skin types. The Lili Lolo Laid Bare Eye Shadow Palette is one of my favorites because it’s loaded with soft, neutral easy-to-wear shades that I can wear everyday or layer-up for a more dramatic evening look. Check out their story and their full line of products!

Merit Beauty - I actually discovered Merit Beauty when I was browsing my local Sephora. I was so pleased to see a larger retailer showcasing a clean, up-and-coming brand along with their more high-profile brands. Merit’s philosophy is based on minimalism and sustainability by offering fewer, multi-tasking products with safe, clean ingredients. I decided to grab their tinted lip oil during my Sephora visit. It’s moisturizing with a light wash of high-shine color that you can build for a dramatic look. To shop and get the full scoop on Merit’s products, check out their website!

100% Pure - Oh I am super excited about this brand. Founded by Susie Wang, James Wang and Rick Kostick with the mission of creating incredibly safe and pure beauty and personal care products. The fruit pigmented makeup is what first caught my attention since most color cosmetics use synthetic dyes. All of their products are cruelty free and many are vegan, gluten free and made in the USA. They have a full line of color cosmetics along with skin care and hair and body products. They also focus on sustainability by creating fully biodegradable formulas, eco-conscious packaging and shipping materials. Check out their entire line of products as well as their mission on their website!

Athr Beauty - Started by Tiila Abbitt in 2018 after working as a product developer for Sephora for 7 years. She wanted to create a brand that aligned with her organic lifestyle but was also effective and on-trend. Athr Beauty focuses on sustainability, ethical sourcing, clean, non-toxic and vegan ingredients. Tiila has been meticulous when it comes to product packaging by eliminating mirrors and magnets in her palettes so that the cardboard case can be recycled when it’s empty as well as using post-consumer glass and plastic that can be recycled at Credo Beauty locations or reused at home. With all of this being said, Tiila wanted to make sure her products actually worked so efficacy is also at the top of her priority list. I absolutely love my Rose Quartz Crystal Quad eye shadow palette. I encourage you take a deep dive and learn about the emerging brand and Tiila’s mission on the Athr Beauty website.

FitGlow Beauty - FitGlow was started by, Anna, a health and fitness expert who was looking for solutions to calm and heal her rosacea-prone skin and had trouble with even the clean beauty options available at that time. Anna worked with experts for over a decade to formulate a line of effective plant-based skincare and cosmetics. Made in the USA, small batch, plant-based, woman owned, dermatologist tested and leaping bunny certified, FitGlow is definitely a brand worth a closer look. They are also committed to sustainability by using recyclable aluminum packaging, reducing virgin plastic use by 95% by 2030, using refillable, PCR and sugarcane packaging. Check out FitGlow’s website for the full scoop and their full line of products!

Honeybee Gardens - Honeybee Gardens has actually been around for many years but it’s definitely not as mainstream and well-known as some of the other clean beauty brands and I think it deserves some attention. It was started by Melissa Buckley in 1995 after she realized that the corporate world was not for her. She had been studying and growing herbs for years and used that knowledge to eventually formulate a shaving cream that worked for her husband’s sensitive skin. Melissa used her passion for herbalism to grow her business to what it is today. Honeybee Gardens features a full line of color cosmetics, including nail polish as well as some facial and body products. Check out Melissa’s story, her philanthropy work with animal shelters and her products on the Honeybee Garden website!

Odacite Skincare - Odacite was started by Valerie Grandury in 2009 after a breast cancer diagnosis. The diagnosis changed her perspective on many things including what she was putting on her body. Finding clean beauty that actually worked at that time was incredibly challenging so she started making her own products in her kitchen. Odacite grew and she moved production out of her kitchen and into a lab in Los Angeles in order to take her products to the next level. All products are clean, vegan-friendly, cruelty free and made in California. They offer a gorgeous line of skin, hair and body products. I’m especially excited to try Le Blue Balm which is a multi-purpose hydrating balm. Check out the rest of the Odacite products and the story behind the brand on the website!

Get Ready for Dry Skin Season with These Clean Beauty Body Moisturizers

If you’re looking to replace just one personal care or beauty product with a cleaner, non-toxic version, body lotion is a great place to start. It covers a large portion of your body and it sits on your bare skin all day so it’s important, given those circumstances, that the ingredients are safe! Yes, it’s entirely possible that some of the ingredients in body lotions can permeate the epidermis and enter your bloodstream. Yes, it’s possible that some of those ingredients in conventional lotions pose a risk to your health when used for a sustained period of time. The good news is that there are SO MANY clean, non-toxic options. I’ve tried quite a few and I am going to share with you a handful of body moisturizers that I like and that suit a number of needs.

What Ingredients Should I Avoid In My Body Lotions?

Parabens - Parabens are found in so many beauty and personal care products, including body lotions. Look for butylparaben, isobutylparaben, methylparaben, propylparaben, or ethylparaben on the ingredients list. Parabens are a preservative, which is essential, but unfortunately there is some concern about their possible link to hormone disruption and even breast cancer. Manufacturers have found safer preservatives like citric acid and vitamin e to replace parabens, but consumers should be aware that the shelf life will be shorter. Make sure you use all paraben-free products up by the date provided on the packaging.

Fragrance/Parfum - Yes, fragrance is going to make your lotion smell really good, but it’s those undisclosed ingredients in fragrance that are of concern. Phthalates, in particular, are the most concerning because of their link to a variety of health issues including hormone disruption, fertility issues, cardiovascular issues and obesity. Phthalates are used to help fragrance last longer and “cling” to the skin.

Mineral Oil - Mineral oil is too heavy for the skin and doesn’t allow it to breath. It basically sits on top of the skin like a plastic coating rather than sinking into the skin and providing a permeable protective layer. It can clog pores and not allow the skin to naturally eliminate toxins.

DMDM Hydantoin - DMDM Hydantoin is a formaldehyde releasing preservative added to many personal care items including body lotions. Formaldehyde is a known carcinogen and can be present in products that include DMDM hydantoin in their ingredients.

Benzalkonium Chloride - Benzalkonium chloride is another preservative and also a surfactant and has been associated with significant skin, eye, and respiratory irritation as well as allergies.

Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) - EDTA is a binding agent added to personal care and beauty products to help improve stability. There is concern that is may be toxic to organs.

Polyethylene glycol (PEG compounds) - PEGs are commonly used in beauty and personal care products as thickeners, solvents, softeners, and moisture-carriers. There is concern that during the manufacturing process, PEGs may be contaminated with significant amounts of ethylene oxide and 1,4-dioxane, both of which are carcinogens.

Retinyl palmitate (Vitamin A Palmitate) - Retinyl palmitate is an ingredient made from both palmitic acid and retinol (Vitamin A). An FDA study has shown that retinyl palmitate, accelerates the development of certain skin cancer lesions and causes photosensitization. The FDA as well as health agencies in Norway and Germany have raised concerns that consistent application of vitamin A creams may also contribute to excessive vitamin A intake for pregnant women and other individuals.

Uses for Charcoal Soap and My Charcoal Bar Shopping Guide

I love my charcoal soap bar. I’ve been using one for several years now and it’s really helped clean up my oily, congested skin. I also appreciate that it has multiple uses and there are so many options for any need and budget. The charcoal bar is definitely having its moment! Activated charcoal is the key ingredient because it bind to and cleanse unwanted substances or “impurities” from the skin’s surface and washes them away. It also has exfoliating properties so it will also exfoliate along with cleansing. Many soap companies are also adding other helpful skin-friendly ingredients like witch hazel and oils to help clarify and soften the skin.

When shopping for a charcoal soap, be sure to read the ingredients to make sure that there aren’t any added fragrances or other ingredients that may irritate skin. Simple ingredients are probably best. So many soap companies are making their version of a charcoal soap so there is definitely one out there for you.

Check out how versatile this trendy soap can be!

How To Make Your Deodorant Work Better and Last Longer

Whether you’re using conventional deodorant or deodorants of the “clean” variety, there are some things you can do to help them work a little better for you. These are super simple tricks that do not require expensive and hard-to-find additional products or have you jumping through hoops just to keep your pits smelling fresh. I should also note that these aren’t foolproof; there are many variables that come in to play when it comes to deodorant efficacy. So there’s a chance you may still have to apply a mid to late day layer to keep you smelling fresh or even possibly consider switching formulas or brands if you’re not getting the results you want. This does not just apply (ha!) to “clean” deodorants either. Unless you’re using some sort of industrial strength deodorant/anti-perspirant, you probably have to reapply to maintain that all-day freshness.

DeoGuidePin.jpg

How To Make Your Deodorant Work Better and Last Longer

  1. Make sure your underarms are completely dry before applying deodorant. Wait until the end of your morning bathroom routine, rather than right after your shower when your skin is still damp and warm (I know, your armpit is always warm, the point is damp and warm).

  2. Lather and gently exfoliate in a circular motion your underarms to remove dead skin cells which prepares skin for application and by unblocking pores that may be harboring stink causing bacteria. This step has been key for me. It really does help maximize and extend the efficacy of my deodorant. I’ve also noticed that just washing with soap does not always leave me smelling fresh (yes, I have smelled my pits after my shower) so this extra step of exfoliating has really helped.

  3. If you have just shaved, wait a few minutes after your shower (you know like I said above) to apply to avoid stinging and irritation.

  4. Less is more. You only need a light, thin layer to do the trick. Too much can stain your clothing and feel uncomfortable on your skin.

  5. This is not spackle people, you may need a touch up. It doesn’t mean that natural deodorants don’t work. There are several factors that may interfere with the its efficacy (activity, overheating, hormones) or that particular deodorant may not be for you. I know people who need a touch up even when using conventional deodorants. This is not uncommon. Keep one at work or some deodorant wipes in your car or purse.

  6. If you have never used a natural, non-toxic deodorant before, your armpits may go through a "detox" stage. Learn more from Schmidt's blog "The Natural" about Underarm Detox. I, personally, have never done an armpit detox but some people sweat, I mean swear by it.

  7. Try using a charcoal bar to cleans your armpits. Cleansing with a charcoal bar may help absorb impurities and detoxify the armpit area (can also be used on other body parts too) to help reduce stink-causing bacteria. Try Beautcounter’s Charcoal Bar or Megababe’s Space Bar Underarm Soap.

Low and/or Non Toxic Deodorant Brands You May Want to Try

Schmidt's

SchmidtsDeo2.jpg

Schmidt’s has a variety of scents and a sensitive skin formula in a variety of scents as well. It goes on smoothly and does not feel sticky or goopy. Odor control is all natural and non-toxic and Schmidt's also has some wetness absorbing properties via it's "award winning" mineral formulation. It’s available at Target and their own website. The regular formula is $9-$10 and the sensitive skin formula is $11 and Schmidt's also offers a "bundle and save" option via their website.

Native

I’ve used Native for a few years and it has worked really well for me. They offer a wide variety of scents including unscented. Check out their website for testimonials and more information. Native is available at Target and Walmart. It’s $12 a stick. You can also buy through their website.

NativeDeo.jpg

Lavanila

Lavanila.jpg

Lavanila was very similar to Schmidt's in consistency and I did find that it kept me fresh all day. However, I only have the travel size and I used it once when I recently had an overnight. Lavanila also has a few lovely scents, including a "sport" formula for more intense odor control. Lavanila is $14-$16 for a 2oz. stick depending on the formulation. Check out their website for more information.

Megababe - A “new to me” deodorant. I just started using and it’s been really good at keeping me fresh and comfortably dry. I typically reapply about three quarters through the day to maintain that freshness through the evening. It’s $14 full price on the Megababe website.

MegababeDeo.jpeg

Beautycounter - As a lover of many Beautycounter products I was excited to try their deodorant. It’s comfortable going on and not heavily fragranced. At first, I wasn’t sure if this one was going to work for me but it ended up being really good. Also, I love the sustainable refill packaging. The initial purchase is $28 and then $18 for the refill so if it really works for you, it might be worth the investment. Check it out on Beautycounter’s website.

Deodorant Wipes

I have never used wipes for all day protection, but they are great for a refresh in the middle of the day or after a trip to the gym. I keep one in my purse and my daughter keeps one in her backpack for gym and after school sports. They come in several scents and I have been finding them at Target for $9 a pack but you can also purchase from Pacifica's website or try Megababe’s Deodorant Wipes.

Pacifica.jpg

Lume

Lume is a new natural deodorant developed by OB/GYN, Dr. Shannon Klingman. It is made from naturally-derived ingredients that are suitable for even sensitive skin-types. It’s clinically proven to control odor anywhere on the body for 72-hours and has been getting rave reviews from users. I have yet to try so I can’t personally comment but let’s just say I have one on order as I write this. Learn more about Lume and purchase through their website.

A Guide to Beauty Product Buzzwords and Labeling and What They Really Mean

You’re a conscious consumer or at least trying to be one and that means reading labels and only buying products that align with your desires, beliefs and philosophies. Unfortunately, labeling and buzzwords in the beauty and personal care industry can be tricky and what you see on the label of your favorite deodorant, face cream or eye shadow may not mean what you think. The reality is that for these terms, there is no governing body regulating or defining them. Which means when a company labels a product, “hypoallergenic,” for example, they are doing so by their own standards and there is no objective organization or governing body testing the product before it goes on the market. And there’s a lot of gray area; meaning companies can use a buzzword but it may it only be partially accurate. These are simply labels and terms used for marketing purposes so it’s really in the hands of the producer or manufacturer to be transparent with the consumer and for the consumer, themselves, to decide if the claims align with their needs and desires. It should be noted that while companies are not required to get FDA approval for their labeling and claims, by law, they must be truthful and not misleading. For more detailed information you can visit the FDA website.

For me, my concerns always circle back to product safety. There are so many buzzwords and labeling jargon that imply that the product is safe, clean or nontoxic, when it could be far from it. I’m going to run through a handful of the most popular beauty and personal care buzzwords and explain what they really mean regarding the products you put on your body everyday.

A Guide to Beauty Product Buzzwords and Labeling and

What They Really Mean

Organic - There is no governing body regulating or defining the term organic as it applies to cosmetics and personal care products, not the FDA nor the USDA. However, cosmetics and personal care products can be certified organic via the USDA if they contain or are made up of agricultural ingredients and be eligible for one of the four USDA organic labeling categories. Ultimately, this means that companies can put the term “organic” on their label by their own definition and standards but they would not be able to carry the USDA organic label unless they went through their certification process. Read more about the USDA organic regulations and certification requirements here.

Vegan - The term “vegan” is also not regulated. Yes, companies are required by the FDA to be honest about their labeling but it is not regulated. Vegan just means that the ingredients do not come from any animal source or contain any animal by-products, including marine life or insects.

Natural - The FDA has never defined nor do they regulate the use of the use of the term “natural” on personal care products. It’s also important to remember that natural doesn’t always mean better or safer. Essential oils, for example, are natural but some can cause endocrine disruption, irritation and allergic reactions, especially if not used properly. Remember things like poison ivy and radon are natural and they are definitely not safe! There is also concern about the increased demand for natural products and its impact on our environment, including over-harvesting and deforestation. Lastly, most natural products need to be used within a certain number of months (anywhere from 6 to 18 months) because efficacy diminishes over time. However, it’s entirely possible that the natural ingredients used to make these products have been sitting around for many months, even years, essentially rendering them ineffective before the product even makes it into the consumer’s hands. So, there are instances where clean synthetic ingredients are better than natural.

Cruelty Free - There are no regulations in the U.S. for the term “cruelty free.” According to The Leaping Bunny Program, when you see “cruelty free”, “not tested on animals” or the simple image of a bunny on the packaging, it may only refer to the finished product and that the testing on animals occurs at the ingredient level. It may also mean that the company can claim they do not perform the testing but contract other companies to do so. The only way to be sure that the product is not tested on animals anywhere in the development and manufacturing process is to buy products with The Leaping Bunny seal and it definitely does not mean that the product is clean or nontoxic.

BathSalts.jpg

Dermatologist Test/Approved - This is yet another label used primarily for marketing purposes. Unfortunately, it doesn’t hold as much weight as many consumers may think. It really just means that a dermatologist reviewed the clinical data and the ingredients before the product became available to consumers. It also doesn’t mean that the product falls into the clean or nontoxic category.

Hypoallergenic - This is another term generally used for marketing purposes. It typically means that the company making the product uses ingredients that they claim cause fewer allergic reactions. It’s a claim that is not tested or regulated by any governing body including the FDA or dermatologists and both agree it does not mean much. So, if you’re concerned about how your skin will react to a product, it’s up to you do to a patch test to know for sure. There is an online resource called Skin Safe that provides product details and guidance for individuals with sensitive skin.

Clean - When you see clean, it is implied that the product and/or company takes into consideration ingredients that are healthy or not harmful for both humans and the environment. However, again, it is just a label and not regulated so companies can use the word “clean” by their own standards. So it is up to you, as the consumer, to determine if the product claims align with what you’re looking for.

Green - This is yet another term that doesn’t really have a set definition or firm standards when it comes to personal and beauty product labeling. Yes, it should mean that the product was made considering the well-being of our environment but that may not necessarily be the case. So, as the consumer, it’s really up to you to trust the labeling or to dig a little deeper and do your own investigating.

Chemical Free - Let’s be clear, chemical free does not mean that the product is safer and the inclusion of chemicals do not mean the product is harmful. There are instances where using clean or nontoxic chemicals is the better and safer option. Even the most ingredient conscious companies use clean chemicals in the their formulations.

Nontoxic - Even what we consider the most harmless substances can be considered toxic at the wrong dose. For the clean beauty industry, nontoxic means that the product should not contain ingredients considered toxic at any dose. In the traditional or conventional beauty industry, nontoxic refers to amount actually found in the product or formulation and applied or used according to the given instructions and use restrictions indicated on the packaging. As you may have guessed, the label or term “nontoxic” is not regulated by any U.S. governing body or organization.

So What Can You Do?

Unfortunately, as the consumer, a lot of the investigative work is in your hands. However, there are resources to help guide you and beauty and personal care brands that have stepped up and made a commitment to stringent safety screening, ethical practices and ingredient transparency. When you buy from these brands, you can buy with a certain degree of confidence (although, finicky consumers will still do their homework). I’m going to leave a list of brands and guides for your reference. It’s important to note that the guides should still be used with a certain amount of discernment. Many products get rated lower because they contain known irritants and allergens, which may not be an issue for many people and EWG’s Skin Deep Database tagged aloe vera as a potential carcinogen in a lotion I use because there was a study one time where ingestion of part of the aloe leaf caused cancer in lab rats. Aloe vera has been used safely for centuries in personal care and beauty products. So it’s important to learn how to use them and how to interpret their ratings.

My Clean Beauty Product Guide

2021-06-15 10.17.02.jpg

If you’ve been hesitant to make the switch from your conventional personal care and beauty products, there’s never been a better time. The clean beauty industry has exploded in the last few years and there are so many options. The good news is that everything from your hair care to your nail products are going clean. Although maybe you’re left wondering: Do they really work? The short answer is yes, BUT like any product some may work for you and some may not. So it’s important to be patient and not give up. Your products are out there, it just may take a little trial and error.

Some quick tips for making the switch easier:

  1. Read the Product Reviews: There’s no better way to learn about customer satisfaction than through customer product review. It’s also important to remember that what may not work for someone else may work great for you.

  2. Try Free Samples First: Many brands and retailers like Beautycounter, Sephora and Ursa Major offer free samples. Ask a consultant or sales associate for some samples so you can try before you buy.

  3. Talk to an Expert: Many of these companies have consultants and/or customer service representatives to help out. Don’t be afraid to reach out and ask questions.

  4. Buy from Companies with Good Return Policies: Most of the major brands and retailers have good, reliable return policies so you can buy and try risk free. Just make sure you read before you buy so you know what to expect if something doesn’t work out. Have a Whole Foods nearby? They carry a wide variety of clean, non-toxic beauty and personal care brands and have a good return policy.

  5. Join a Clean Beauty/Living Facebook Group: Joining a group is a great way to ask questions and get feedback from individuals knee deep in the clean living world and those just getting their feet wet. Join my women’s only Facebook Group here.

  6. Switch Out One Product At a Time: Do not. I repeat, do not throw out all of your old products and start fresh. It’s too expensive and overwhelming. Replace slowly as you tun out of individual items so you can take your time to research the right products for you.

DIY Relaxing Bath Soak

2021-05-20 12.55.54.jpg

Epsom salts have a lot of uses including making a great bath soak for tired and sore muscles (I love soaking my feet after a long day of running around). You can use them plain or add essential oils for some added benefits. I also like adding a little plant-based (not synthetic) food coloring for a subtle color. I reuse jars and other containers but you can certainly buy more decorative containers, especially if you plan on gifting your bath salts. Speaking of gifting, these bath salts make a great gift from a child to a mom or grandmother since the recipe is so simple! I choose essentials oils that help with relaxation or pain relief. I used yuzu essential oil for its relaxation benefits in this recipe but there are so many other options. Eucalyptus oil makes a great option if you’re congested, peppermint or lavender for headaches or rose or ylang ylang for anxiety (and these both smell really good too). I also love this recipe because all of the ingredients are easy to find.

Just Three Easy-to-Find Ingredients

Just Three Easy-to-Find Ingredients

Easy DIY Relaxing Bath Soak

1 Cup of Plain Epsom salts

5-7 Drops of Your Choice of Essential Oil (You can find the yuzu oil I used here)

4-5 Drops of Plant-based Food Coloring (I like this one from Whole Foods)

A Clean Jar or Container (I reuse old jars but I also like these glass jars on Amazon)

Plain White Labels (completely optional, especially if you’re just making them for yourself)

Other Optional Additions:

1/4 cup of dried flower petals or buds (like lavender or rose. This would be a great idea if you’re giving as a gift)

2 Tablespoons of Baking Soda (will help hold the scent in the bath salts longer)

1-2 Tablespoons of Body Oil (sweet almond oil is good one)

Add Epsom salts to a medium bowl. Use hands to break up any lumps. Add essential oil a couple drops at a time and mix into salts until you get the desired intensity; you don’t want to do so much that the scent is overwhelming because essential oils are strong! Add food coloring a couple drops at a time as well until and mix until you get the desired shade (I use my hands for best results. Use gloves if you want to keep your hands clean). A little tip: If you want to mix colors to get a new color, mix them in a small container first and then slowly add to your salts. You can also mix in a gallon-size Zip Lock bag and blend it all together shake-and-bake style but I like using a bowl because it creates less waste.

Lavender ($7-$15), Lemon ($6-$10) and Peppermint Oils ($7-$10) are Affordable. I really like Zongle Therapeutics or Florihana for essential oils.

Jars FREE if you reuse ones that you already have at home. A set of 6 on Amazon is $17

My Dry, Itchy Skin Remedies

The temperature and humidity drop, the heat goes up and my skin cries in agony. I also spend a lot of time outside regardless of the temperature, which is really hard on my skin too. In recent years, I’ve had to step up my game when it comes to winter skin care. With a little trial and error, I’ve found a collection of clean, non-toxic products that get me and my skin gracefully through the winter months.

Spending Time Outside Can Dry Your Skin Out

Spending Time Outside Can Dry Your Skin Out

My Favorite Products for Dry Winter Skin

Body Care

Cleanse - When it comes to cleansing and exfoliating during winter, I am really super gentle on my skin. I use Ursa Major’s Morning Mojo bar soap on key areas and then exfoliate only once or twice a week with oSea’s Undaria Body Polish. Tip: Make sure your shower water is not too hot. It’s tempting to use more hot water when it’s cold outside but it strips the skin of essential moisture.

Moisturize and Protect - Acure Seriously Soothing 24hour Moisture Lotion: With cocoa butter and colloidal oatmeal, this lotion is powerhouse for my itchy dry skin. I apply immediately after my shower (I make sure my shower is never too hot) and then spot treat right before bedtime if necessary. I like that it’s soothing and protective and unscented. It’s a good price point (about $12 for an 8oz. tube). Click here to purchase. Acure Everyday Eczema Lotion: This is another great body lotion option that is soothing and protective during the winter months. I typically toggle between this one and the Seriously Soothing Moisture Lotion depending on what’s in stock or if I’m dealing with an eczema flair-up. It’s also about $12 for and 8 oz. tube. Click here to purchase.

Give Your Skin Some Love in the Winter

Give Your Skin Some Love in the Winter

Facial Care

Cleanse - Not so long ago, I could use the same cleanser all year. Now? Not so much. I like a cleanser that removes the day, including all makeup but doesn’t strip my skin or leave it feeling tight or dry afterward. I love both oSea’s Ocean Cleansing Milk and Beautycounter’s Lotus Glow Cleansing Balm. Tip: I only wash my face with a cleanser at night. In the morning I splash my face with some water in the shower and that is it!

My Favorite Facial Moisturizer

My Favorite Facial Moisturizer

Moisturize and Protect - I’ve found one facial moisturizer that I can use all year without feeling too heavy in the summer and too light in the winter. Ursa Major Golden Hour Recovery Cream is honestly the best moisturizer I’ve ever used. I use it both day and night so it streamlines my routine. It is very calming and soothing to the skin and it hydrates without being heavy or greasy. What I love about Ursa Major is that they do not release a new product unless their entire team is 100% in love with it, so they are focused on quality, not quantity. Shop the cream. I also use facial oil all year to balance my skin, but I especially need it in the winter months to provide a boost of moisture and protect from the elements. I only use facial oils that are made exclusively with botanically-derived oils so they sink into skin and don’t clog pores like Beautycounter’s Brightening Facial Oil and oSea’s Essential Hydrating Oil.

Hand Care

Cleanse - I wash my hands A LOT. Between cooking for my family, taking care of our two dogs Ruby and day, house chores and running errands, I have many reasons why I wash my hands throughout the day. I really try to avoid hand sanitizers as much as possible because I don’t think it’s healthy to constantly be applying alcohol to your skin. So, hand soap it is. I’ve been using Seventh Generation hand soap in Mandarin Orange and Grapefruit scent for years and it’s never dried out my skin. I also like Puracy liquid hand soaps if I am unable to find Seventh Generation.

I love using this before bed.

I love using this before bed.

Moisturize and Protect - No matter how moisturizing my hand soap is, I always follow up with a dose of hand cream. During the day, I really love the refreshing peppermint scent of Avalon Organics Peppermint Hand and Body Lotion. In the evening, before bed, I apply Caudalie Vinoperfect Brightening Hand Cream and let it do it’s work while I sleep.

A staple supplement in our house. Great for your skin!

Nutrition for Winter Skin

Omega-3 Fatty Acids - Make sure you’re getting these for many reasons! Omega-3s are great for your skin but also for brain and cardiovascular health. I take fish oil but I also throw a couple of tablespoons of ground flax seeds in my smoothie, yogurt or chia seed pudding. We use Metagenics EPA and DHA Omega-3 Supplements in our house. Shop the Metagenics fish oil and the ground flaxseed.

What to Eat and Drink - Staying hydrated by drinking enough water definitely helps. I get bored with plain water so I sometimes to infuse it with fruit or drink herbal tea to mix things up. A diet rich in good fats is also good for keeping your skin hydrated. Fish, avocados, nuts (especially walnuts), seeds and a variety of colorful fruits and vegetables can really help keep skin healthy.

The Good Fat in Avocados is really good for your skin!

The Good Fat in Avocados is really good for your skin!

Lip Care

Moisturize and Protect - While I do like to use lip balm for comfort and to protect my lips while I’m outside, the best remedy for dry, tight lips is staying hydrated. I really like Burt’s Bees lip balms and Lanolips softly tinted lip balms if I want a little sheer color. It’s especially important to make sure your lip products are non-toxic since you actually ingest them. If you find your lips are splitting and cracking no matter you do, especially in the warmer months, you could have a vitamin or mineral deficiency; zinc, b-vitamins and iron are the most common.

Climate Control

The perfect portable humidifier

The perfect portable humidifier

A Cool Mist Humidifier - I don’t know why it took me so long to buy a humidifier. Perhaps it’s because I immediately think of the ridiculous monstrosity of a humidifier we had in our home during the late 70s/early 80s. Like so many things, humidifiers have come a long way and I love the small, portable versions like this H2O Humidifier. It comes in several colors and it’s tiny size fits just about anywhere.

Turn Down the Heat - The higher the thermostat, the more the heat is going to turn on and dry out your skin. I try to keep the heat below 70, especially for sleeping (we actually turn our heat down to 65 at night and then bump it back up during the day).

My Routine For Reviving Tired, Dull Skin

I don’t know about you guys but my skin gets fried this time of year. Between the lack of sleep and sun, dry air, too much time indoors, masks and perhaps too many cocktails, it really takes a beating and, unfortunately, the older I get the more it shows. While I do try to keep up with my healthy habits, sometimes I’m in need of a quick fix (like when I have a family brunch on New Year’s Day after being up all night drinking champagne). After years of being a make-up junkie, I have picked up a few tricks to help either restore my glow or fake it if I’m really in a pinch.

What to do for Tired Eyes:

Glossier’s Haloscope Highlighting Stick

Glossier’s Haloscope Highlighting Stick

  • Highlighting Stick: I use Glossier’s Haloscope a highlighting stick that comes in three shades (Quartz is my shade of choice). I apply it in both the inner and outer corners of my eyes to help give me that bright-eyed, well-rested look. Bonus: You can use this highlighting stick all over your face to give it a nice dewy glow. I like it because it blends nicely and looks subtle and natural.

  • Shimmery Shadow: When I use a neutral shimmery eye shadow, I feel like it gives me an instant eye lift. I like soft pinks, champagne, taupe, beiges for every day because they are foolproof to apply and look natural. A quick sweep of eye shadow and mascara and I’m good to go. I love the shades in Jane Iredale’s eye shadow trio in Sundown.

What to do for Dull Skin:

BCFacialOil.JPG
  • Facial Razor: This is one of my newest tools to help create a nice clean surface by removing hair and dead skin cells that can dull skin and make it more difficult for your glow-inducing products to do their job. I was a little intimidated at first but it’s super easy to use, it did not irritate my skin at all and I was really pleased with how clean and smooth my skin was afterward. I like this one from Sephora. Still not sure about the facial razor? An exfoliating facial wash or scrub will get rid of dead skin cells. I really like Acure’s Brightening Facial Scrub.

  • Facial Oil: I’m a big fan of facial oils. They give a good boost of moisture without being oily or greasy and leave skin looking hydrated and refreshed. There are about a zillion different versions of facial oils out there but I really like the ones by Beautycounter or for a less expensive option try Acure’s Rosehip Oil. All of the oils are natural and botanically-derived so they sink right into the skin and do not clog pores.

  • Highlighting Sticks and Powders: Highlighting products can be applied to several key places on your face to give you a lift. Apply to your cheekbones, brow bones, jawline, bridge of nose and your forehead along your hairline. Make sure you blend really well and check yourself in natural light to make sure you didn’t over do it (speaking from personal experience). I like Beautycounter’s Luminous Highlighting Powder.

  • Hydrating Facial Mists: I’m going to be honest when I say I thought these were useless, but when I was desperate to find something to help give me a mid-day moisture boost, I decided to give one a try. I really like Wander Beauty’s Glow Getter Mist and OSea’s facial mists. They both give a little moisture boost and refresh and perk up skin.

A little bronzer goes a long way!

A little bronzer goes a long way!

What to do for Pale Skin:

A sweep of lipstick is a good way to perk up a pale face!

A sweep of lipstick is a good way to perk up a pale face!

  • Bronzer: I use a shimmery bronzer (no matte, powdery products on my face) to highlight and define certain areas on my face like the hollows under my cheekbones and my forehead along my hairline. I always think a little bronzer helps you look more refreshed and if applied correctly can give you that healthy sun-kissed glow. I like Beautycounter’s Radiant All Over Bronzer (it’s also on sale right now).

  • A Little Color on Your Lips: A little touch of color on your lips can help brighten your face up. This is what I do for pictures as opposed to full on lipstick so I have a fresh, natural look in photos but not “made-up.” A lip stain works well but I also I take any complimentary shade of lipstick in a darker color (I think pink or rosy shades work best) and apply just enough to give some color and then just enough lip balm to add some moisture. I also like lightly tinted lip balms. I love this Burt’s Bees Tinted Lip Balm in Red Dahlia or Hibiscus or Pacifica’s Lip Tint in Guava Berry or Sugared Fig.

  • Sunless Tan: I often don’t think about sunless tanning in the winter but with a light application, sunless tan can enhance your skin tone without looking unseasonably tan. I recently found Coola’s Anti-Aging Face Serum Sunless Tanner and it is the first sunless tanner that does not dry out my skin and has subtle, buildable color, so one application gives a nice glow. Just make sure you exfoliate before applying any self tanning product so that the color is clean and even.

Good Skin from Inside Out

Me2.jpeg

Healthy skin truly comes from the inside out. Proper hydration and a good diet full of fruits and vegetables will help your skin look it’s best. There are a few supplements that can help give your good habits a boost. Omega-3 fatty acids, CoQ10, vitamins C, D and E, selenium and zinc are all great for your skin. If you drink alcohol or caffeine, make sure you’re drinking at least two glasses of water for every 1 glass/cup of an alcoholic or caffeinated beverage. Also getting outside is great for your skin. There’s nothing like some exercise, sun and fresh air to give your skin a healthy glow.

My Non Toxic Nail Polish and DIY Manicure Guide

Whether it’s a DIY job or at a salon, I love a good manicure. Number one priority for me is making sure my nail products are safe but I also want them to be effective and long-lasting. Is that even possible? Yes! I’m amazed by the non-toxic nail products now available that actually give you a fabulous manicure. In addition, the color selections have grown exponentially since I picked up my first bottle of clean nail polish 10 years ago (a lot of improvements have been made since then). I’m going to give you the scoop on the nail care brands that I know as well as provide links for application tips and easy nail art design videos!

TenOverTen.JPG

Ten Over Ten - Ten Over Ten was launched by a three-woman team out of NYC and is one the first “new generation” non-toxic nail products that I tried after many years of skipping the ineffective and disappointing polishes and treatments. If you happen to be in NYC, you can visit one of their two salons or you can buy their full line of products online. They offer 36 different colors and a full line of accessories and tools. Ten Over ten is “8-free” which means its free of 8 of the most toxic nail polish ingredients (dibutyl phthalate (dbp), toluene, formaldehyde, formaldehyde resin, camphor, ethyl tosylamide, xylene, triphenyl phosphate (tphp)). The polish is $12/bottle. Shop their full line of products here.

Cote - Cote is another great non-toxic nail polish company out of Los Angeles started by two clean beauty conscious women. They have an amazing collection of 126 colors along with a line of accessories, treatments and tools. Polish is $18/bottle and also free of formaldehyde, dibutyl phthalate (DBP), toluene, camphor, formaldehyde resin, TPHP, xylene, ethyl tosylamide, parabens, and gluten. Shop Cote products here.

Sundays Studio - I have not tried Sundays Studio yet but they have a collection of 50+ sleek, sophisticated and long-lasting shades. All polishes are 10-free which means free of the 10 most toxic nail polish ingredients (TPHP, dibutyl phthalate, toluene, xylene, ethyl tosylamide, camphor, formaldehyde, formaldehyde resin, parabens, and tert-butyl hydroperoxide) normally found in conventional polishes. $18/bottle. Shop online here.

JinSoon - I’ve used JinSoon for a few years now and I love the color selection, ease of application and durability. JinSoon is $18/bottle and their full line of products are available online here. JinSoon polish is also “10-free.”

Zoya.JPG

Zoya - Zoya is another great brand I’ve used for years. I only recently learned that they were one of the first nail care companies to eliminate the top six most toxic chemicals from their formulations. Zoya has about 400 colors and are $10/bottle. Shop the Zoya website here.

My Recommended Tools

I recommend getting yourself some basic nail tools to make things easier and help give a cleaner, salon-grade manicure (or close to it). Cuticle pushers and nippers have been a game changer for me. Here is a set on Amazon, but many of these recommended nail polish brands also have tools. I recently purchased this nail clean-up brush and nail polish remover pot from Olive and June. The pot makes it easier to remove polish from individual nails in the event you make an oops and without ruining your remaining polished nails.

Nourishing DIY Body, Hand and Face Oil

I’ve learned a lot about oils in the last year or so especially these powerhouse oils that do amazing things for the skin. You can use them on your body, hair, hands, nails and even you face because most of these oils do not clog your pores (If you are using it on your face, you only need a few drops; a little goes a long way!). You can make this for yourself as a nice treat or as a thoughtful and luxurious gift for someone special. Who doesn’t love a handmade gift?

A couple things before you get started: Properly extracted oils can be expensive and since many of these have very similar properties, you may only want to choose one or two to add to your carrier oil. In addition, make sure the oils you do choose are high quality so they do what they’re intended to do! Also make sure that when you receive these oils, none of them have gone rancid; any company that sends a rancid oil should honor an exchange or refund without a hassle. Lastly, test on your skin for sensitivity before jumping in and making your oil blend.

I bought all my supplies on Amazon, including the bottle. This is what I used:

  1. 8 oz. Dispenser bottle

  2. 16 oz. Bottle of Sweet Almond Oil (or your favorite carrier oil) - Sweet almond oil makes a great carrier oil but is also really good for the skin and does not clog pores. Read more about the benefits of sweet almond oil.

  3. 8 oz. Bottle of Carrot Seed Oil - Such a powerhouse of an oil with anti-fungal, anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant and anti-aging properties (a little higher on the comedogenic scale so if you’re acne prone and want to use this on you face, you may want to skip the addition of this oil. Read more about carrot seed oil benefits.

  4. 4 oz Bottle of Red Raspberry Seed Oil - Also an amazing oil with sun protective, anti-aging, anti-inflammatory, anti-acne, non-comedogenic (won’t clog pores) and helps the skin retain moisture. Read more about red raspberry seed oil benefits.

  5. 4 oz. Bottle of Rosehip Seed Oil - Moisturizing, hydrating, can reduce hyperpigmentation (due to it’s high vitamin A content), collagen boosting (from vitamin A and C), anti-inflammatory, sun protective and anti-aging. Rosehip oil is also low on the comedogenic scale so it most likely not cause breakouts. Read more about rosehip seed oil benefits.

  6. A Measuring Cup (one that will measure ounces) or you can use a 1 oz. shot glass

  7. A small funnel if your measuring cup does not have spout.

  8. *Optional - add skin-loving sandalwood, neroli, ylang ylang or frankincense essential oils

For an 8 ounce dispenser bottle, I use 4 ounces of the carrier oil (sweet almond, in my case), 2 ounces of carrot seed oil and then 1 ounce each of the red raspberry seed and rosehip seed oils. If you’re using only the carrier oil and one or two of the other oils, try adding more of the carrier oil (6 ounces) and then only 2 ounces of the other oils.

Pour into your dispenser bottle and enjoy! I usually give it a quick, gentle shake before I use it to make sure all of the oils are combined. I store any remaining oils in the fridge to avoid going rancid. You also want to use your oil blend up within 6 months.
